A ‘Can do’ Mind Set

Make this day the first day of the rest o your life where you actively choose to really good to yourself,

So it is the 1st of February and I am wondering how many of you have already quit on your New Year Resolutions?

You will remember that I refer to them as ‘re-solutions’ mainly because people are saying the same thing each New Year, I will exercise more, I will eat less, stop smoking etc.

So how many of you are you read the statement above recognise yourself?  Well here is the thing you do not have to be guilt ridden and view yourself as having failed yet again, you could simply say right here right now – I am going to take action that sees me sticking to what I said I was going to give up, take up, go and do.

Set yourself a ‘can do’ frame, be nice to yourself and you might be surprised at how much easier it will be to get back up and start again.  One of the things I decided to do in 2012 was to be as nice to myself, as most of my friends are to me.  If I treat myself in the same way then I know I will always have my best interests at heart.

So right here, right now take a moment and simply remind yourself how special you are.  We are all unique; we all have something to share with the world.  It is time to let your own light shine, let the joy, love and laughter come through and quite simply lighten up on yourself.

To that end in about 1 hour’s time I am off to a Zumba class, the combination of movement and fantastic music causes a rush of happy brain chemicals!  What have you done today to alter your own brain chemistry in a natural way?  Taking exercise, dancing, laughing going for a walk on a gorgeous wintery day will help deliver some fabulous cocktails of your own free ‘happy drugs’.

Make this day the first day of the rest of your life where you actively choose to really be good to yourself.

When we are acting from a place where our physiology and psychology are in a place of excellence we can only ever be good to ourselves.

New Years ‘Re-solutions’

We have had the season to be jolly now we have the season of ‘oh bugger’ I should lose weight, stop drinking, exercise more and and and and and……..all the ‘shoulds’ most of us won’t do.

Now here is the thing most of us are actually repeating the same ‘re-solutions’ that we have said before.  You will notice that I split it down to ‘re-solution’ now that is quite simply we already have the solution and always have had it.  We just chose to ignore it, or not make it important enough to take action.

So get clear on what it is that you want, not what you don’t want.

So state your ‘re-solutions’ in positives

So I want to become healthier – now this could mean weigh, less, exercise more, eat better food.

Now when we say I want to become healthier the neurological and physiological reaction generated is far more positive and of course it is easier to generate action form a positive state.

So your opportunity this 2012 is to be more of who you can be and the paradox of that for many of you will be that there will be less of you – if you’re not clear on what I am saying here I am talking to those of you who want to weigh less.

If you want some help along the way then check out my Facebook page http://bit.ly/janishough where you will find a FREE video series of tips to help you be who you chose to be.

Choose to feel good NOW

Every morning that you wake up you have a choice on how you feel, and how you will go through your day.

Now I often tell my clients that the first thing that happens when I wake up is that I say to myself ‘hey cool I’ve woken up’ well it is cool cause it means I am still here!

So what is it that allows you to make the choice between the good days and the bad days?

It is all about your internal dialogue and what you are saying to yourself and the brain chemicals produced. If you wake up and think oh bugger I am still tired and I didn’t sleep very well it is quite likely that you will have a slow awakening and feel quite lethargic.

You are in charge of you and the choices you make. Now some of you will say that you have no choice about getting up and making the kids breakfast, going to work etc.

Well maybe you think you don’t have a choice on that however you do have a choice on how you go about doing what it is your doing.

We all have a choice on what mental ‘state’ we choose to be in.  So if you wake up in the ‘oh shit’ mood it is likely that you will perceive that most of what is going to happen to you today is going to be shit.  Where as if you wake up with the thought, cool here is another day what can I do with it, how can I make it more fun, how can I relax more, how can I just ‘be’ in the moment of making a choice to be happy, you might find you have a good day.

So if you have the choice of a good day or a bad day it really is a no brainer isn’t it.  Now I am not saying that shit doesn’t happen because of course it does, however you get to use this amazing bit of kit called your ‘brain’ to decide how it is that you will be when faced with the shit.

So make great ‘brain juice’ as John La Valle calls it.  Latest research states that every feeling we have in our body is a ‘neuro-chemical event.  Which means every time we perceive something in our brains, chemical are released into our bodies.  So if everything is going well the right cocktail of brain chemicals get released.

So as an example if you were walking down the street and someone came up to you and started shouting angrily at you your brain would interpret that as possible danger and release appropriate amounts of cortisol and adrenaline, causing you to sharpen and narrow your focus, and prepare you for fight or flight; we all recognise that I am sure.

Equally when it comes to feeling great we release dopamine and serotonin.  Dopamine is classed as a ‘motivational’ chemical; it tends to be around when we are having our basic needs met.  Serotonin is the ‘feel good’ chemical, calms and soothes, if you win a game or some money you will get a hit of it.  Basically the unique cocktail that the two create is focus, energising, satisfaction and well being.

So who doesn’t want to feel more energised and satisfied?

Last yet not least we have endorphins. Now this is your natural way to control pain and create pleasure.  We get a natural endorphin rush when we do physical exercise, have great sex, laugh lots and generally do things that make you feel happy.

So I am asking you today to make a choice to feel good for no reason other than feeling good and practice creating the unique blend of ‘brain juice’ to feel good now.

Wake up and smell the coffee

So yesterday I started my juice detox, it is for 7 days.

So why do it? Because I owe my body the opportunity to be more healthy and more energised. Quite simply my mind and body work better when I am kind to myself and put in fuel that works for me.

Last week I spent 2 days working with clients on what I call ‘waist’ management and of course that got me to thinking it was time for me to detox my body so that it can catch up with mind.

A mind body detox is a perfect combination, let’s face it when the mind is clear the body feels better and vice versa, equally if the mind is full of toxicity then so is the body.

So today I am feeling the results of not having had a coffee.

So my poor brain is having it’s normal brain chemistry messed with, and I have a lingering headache.

So here is a little bit about what my normal cup of morning coffee does for me.

To a nerve cell, caffeine looks like adenosine. Now without getting too complex adenosine generally makes us feel tired. The caffeine binds to the adenosine receptor. However, it doesn’t slow down the cell’s activity like adenosine would. So basically the cell can no longer identify with adenosine because caffeine is taking up all the receptors that adenosine would normally bind to. Crucially instead of slowing down because of the adenosine’s effect, the nerve cells speed up. Caffeine also causes the brain’s blood vessels to constrict, because it blocks adenosine’s ability to open them up.

So, now you have increased neurons firing in the brain. The pituitary gland sees all of this activity and thinks some sort of emergency must be occurring, so it releases hormones that tell the adrenal glands to produce adrenaline. So the adrenaline rush gets my heart beating faster, increases blood flow to muscles, blood pressure rises, to mention just a few. Do any of them sound like a good thing?

Bloody hell all this from a cup of coffee, yet here is the thing as I read back what I have just written I am thinking why the hell would I do that, yet still a little bit of me is saying how much I like a good cup of coffee!!!

So on day two I am going to make a conscious effort to treat my brain chemistry to some good brain frequencies so to that end I shall be going on the mindspa and also doing some more exercise.

I owe it to myself to create brain chemistry that is good for me.

What do you owe yourself a cup of coffee or some fresh air and exercise?

We Are All Visitors

“We are all visitors to this time, this place. We are just passing through. Our purpose here is to observe, to learn, to grow, to love… and then we return home.” – Australian Aboriginal Proverb

This week has been a week of love, light, laughter and sparkle as one of my nieces got married.  So the day was perfect as it had the whole mix of smiles, laughter happiness, and joy and let us not forget the tears!

Now for me there were the tears of joy at seeing all my family together looking gorgeous, then the tears at seeing my niece looking so beautiful.  Then tears whilst vows were made, tears whilst moving poems and readings were had, tears whilst speeches made.  All of the tears were intermingled with smiles, laughter and feelings of absolute joy and love.

So if we are just visitors here how do we want it to be – well I want it to be like the day I just described.  It had all the right ingredients that make life a full and rich experience.  It got me to thinking that I am going to make more of an effort to have those exact ingredients in every day, maybe a few less tears.  Yet actually just like the quote I read the other day, if you were moved to tears every day through either sadness or happiness and we smiled lots and laughed lots that to me would be a pretty magical day.

So if you had an unexpected visitor from another galaxy coming to check you out here on earth to see how you live – would he/she want to stay based on the experience that you showed them whilst they were with you?  Would you show them, love, laughter, joy, passion, humility and all those other emotions, that if we went through them each day we would actually be living a ‘full’ life in a truly connected way.

So how much do you observe each day that gives you purpose and what if the purpose was simply to be here now and laugh, love, cry, grow, share and be fully present sharing all of those emotions with everyone that you connected with every day.

What an amazing way to be. I wonder then that the visitor from the other galaxy might think ‘wow’ what a cool place to be ‘I think I will extend my visit’.

So are you living your life in a way that if a visitor shows up to spend time with you they think, yeah cool I shall stay here and hang out for a while, or would they get the hell out and back to there galaxy.

If you know they would get the hell out, because that is the way that you feel about your life, then now would be a great time to start to re-write your visit here, I mean after all you get to write your own time here so make it count. Look for opportunities everyday to get a sensory rich experience that quite simply reminds you why you are here and what you have to share with others.

So as my niece Sarah and her husband Andy start their new journey together I wish them all the joy, laughter and happiness and all I ask is that they share that love and laughter with all who they meet, because we can never have to much love and laughter can we?

The ‘Dark’ side

Knowing your own darkness is the best method for dealing with the darkness of others –  Carl Jung

The dark side, what does that mean to you?  Well when I read it I realised it meant for me the times that I find myself in what I would normally refer to as my ‘lower’ self, my ‘oh woe’ is me place.  Now here is the thing I am human like everyone else and sometimes I do go to that place the ‘dark side’, however I only spend moments there.

In order to leave the ‘dark side’ I have to disassociate from the ‘bullshit’ internal dialogue that I am having with my ‘self’.  So I step out of that place and look with new eyes, and often I say to my ‘self’ what have you got to learn from being in the ‘dark side’, now there is always a lesson to be learnt there and really the first lesson is dip your toes in the ‘dark side’ then get the hell out!!!

Now I know that you like me probably know lots of people who spend much of their time in the ‘dark side’, they are what I often to refer to as ‘toxic’ people, the people that it seems suck your life’s energy from you.  Now as the years have gone by and I have learnt many things the most important thing to remind myself is that I have to surround myself with people who are ‘radiators’ they generate warmth, energy, they resonate good thoughts and feelings.

So take some time and look at the people in your life and decide if they are ‘toxic’ or ‘radiators’ and then take a little more time to look back on your interactions with them and decide whether the time you spend with them feels like you are in the ‘dark side’ or if the time you spend with them is on the ‘radiator’ side.

The next stage is to minimise or cut altogether your time with the ‘dark side’ and maximise your time with ‘radiators’.

I am really lucky I have lots of ‘radiators’ in my life.  When I slip over to the ‘dark side’ it doesn’t take me long to realise that I just want to be in with the ‘radiators’ in the warm glow, of love light and happiness…..

who wants to join me?

Focus on what you want

One of the first questions that I ask clients is ‘”What do you want?’

Normally what happens is that my client will then start to list what it is that they do not want. This does not surprise me any more, as it seems that it is far easier for people to list all the things they don’t want.

Now here is the thing we get what we focus on. So it makes sense to spend time focusing our minds on what it is that we do want, rather than what do not want.

Remember what we see is what we look for – so what is it that you are looking for and what is it that you then want to see.

So with that in mind, I want you to imagine that it is now the future lets say a few years before the end of your life. You never took action to create the changes that you have wanted too. How do you feel? What does it inspire you to do or not do now?

Now take another moment and imagine that you are again at the future with a few years left to live yet the difference is that you took action every day towards making the changes that you wanted in your life. How does this feel? What does living in this way inspire you to do on a daily basis to make change happen easily?

So having done the simple exercise above now would be a good time to start to plan for what it is that you do want and what action you are going to take each and every day to make sure that you are living life to the full.

As you start to make tiny changes each day you can find yourself becoming focused on feeling good and stepping in to a future that you want to be in.

Life & Learning

I have been really busy the last 2 months with new clients and also 12 days in the states re-learning and consolidating what I know.  We all need to take time out to review and check where we are.

So just as I encourage my clients to be open to new ideas and new ways of being I follow my own advice and it was good to submerge myself in a place of learning.  Here’s the thing I owe it to myself to take time out so that when I am with clients they get my A-game.

Whoever we are whatever we know there is always more so the blogs that I will be posting in the future will be about sharing more of the knowledge that I have gained and how I work with clients to enable them to lead better lives.

I will also be posting exercises and techniques that can easily be incorporated in to your daily lives so that you too can start to lead a better life easily.

So watch out for my blog posts and if you have something you want me to write about then drop me an email to janis@janishough.com

Wake up to who you can be…

“The worst mistake you can make is to think you’re alive, when you’re really just asleep in life’s waiting room”

The past months or so has seen me working intensively with several clients who are making massive life changes. In some way I think that they are quite literally waking up to who they can and will be.

We all have so much conditioning put upon us. From the moment we are born we are being handed a script that is full of the ‘ways’ of our parents, our teachers our peers. Now some of what they hand us in the ‘script’ is really useful and then there is the other ‘stuff’ that is really not useful, yet it is the way that they grew up and therefore they hand it to us.

Now sometimes what happens is that we start to ask questions, we start to wonder why and we question and then we might test things a little. So you might have been told to stay in your box, and then someone like me might say, ‘what box’ there is no box, for after all we are only ever limited by other people’s beliefs.

So when you have an awakening and you start to realise that you can live a different way, you can write your own rules, it really is as if you have truly woken up. When you wake up and actually start to ‘shape shift’ in to the ‘you’ that you have been waiting to become you can start to resonate in a new way with a new energy.

So I guess my question is how many of you are going to spend the rest of your time in the waiting room, or is now the time to wake up and start living.

I often like to share stories so here goes I read this and it resonated with me,

Egg, by Andy Weir

You were on your way home when you died.

It was a car accident. Nothing particularly remarkable, but fatal nonetheless. You left behind a wife and two children. It was a painless death. The EMTs tried their best to save you, but to no avail. Your body was so utterly shattered you were better off, trust me.

And that’s when you met me.

“What… what happened?” You asked. “Where am I?”

“You died,” I said, matter-of-factly. No point in mincing words.

“There was a… a truck and it was skidding…”

“Yup,” I said.

“I… I died?”

“Yup. But don’t feel bad about it. Everyone dies,” I said.

You looked around. There was nothingness. Just you and me. “What is this place?” You asked. “Is this the afterlife?”

“More or less,” I said.

“Are you god?” You asked.

“Yup,” I replied. “I’m God.”

“My kids… my wife,” you said.

“What about them?”

“Will they be all right?”

“That’s what I like to see,” I said. “You just died and your main concern is for your family. That’s good stuff right there.”

You looked at me with fascination. To you, I didn’t look like God. I just looked like some man. Or possibly a woman. Some vague authority figure, maybe. More of a grammar school teacher than the almighty.

“Don’t worry,” I said. “They’ll be fine. Your kids will remember you as perfect in every way. They didn’t have time to grow contempt for you. Your wife will cry on the outside, but will be secretly relieved. To be fair, your marriage was falling apart. If it’s any consolation, she’ll feel very guilty for feeling relieved.”

“Oh,” you said. “So what happens now? Do I go to heaven or hell or something?”

“Neither,” I said. “You’ll be reincarnated.”

“Ah,” you said. “So the Hindus were right,”

“All religions are right in their own way,” I said. “Walk with me.”

You followed along as we strode through the void. “Where are we going?”

“Nowhere in particular,” I said. “It’s just nice to walk while we talk.”

“So what’s the point, then?” You asked. “When I get reborn, I’ll just be a blank slate, right? A baby. So all my experiences and everything I did in this life won’t matter.”

“Not so!” I said. “You have within you all the knowledge and experiences of all your past lives. You just don’t remember them right now.”

I stopped walking and took you by the shoulders. “Your soul is more magnificent, beautiful, and gigantic than you can possibly imagine. A human mind can only contain a tiny fraction of what you are. It’s like sticking your finger in a glass of water to see if it’s hot or cold. You put a tiny part of yourself into the vessel, and when you bring it back out, you’ve gained all the experiences it had.

“You’ve been in a human for the last 48 years, so you haven’t stretched out yet and felt the rest of your immense consciousness. If we hung out here for long enough, you’d start remembering everything. But there’s no point to doing that between each life.”

“How many times have I been reincarnated, then?”

“Oh lots. Lots and lots. An in to lots of different lives.” I said. “This time around, you’ll be a Chinese peasant girl in 540 AD.”

“Wait, what?” You stammered. “You’re sending me back in time?”

“Well, I guess technically. Time, as you know it, only exists in your universe. Things are different where I come from.”

“Where you come from?” You said.

“Oh sure,” I explained “I come from somewhere. Somewhere else. And there are others like me. I know you’ll want to know what it’s like there, but honestly you wouldn’t understand.”

“Oh,” you said, a little let down. “But wait. If I get reincarnated to other places in time, I could have interacted with myself at some point.”

“Sure. Happens all the time. And with both lives only aware of their own lifespan you don’t even know it’s happening.”

“So what’s the point of it all?”

“Seriously?” I asked. “Seriously? You’re asking me for the meaning of life? Isn’t that a little stereotypical?”

“Well it’s a reasonable question,” you persisted.

I looked you in the eye. “The meaning of life, the reason I made this whole universe, is for you to mature.”

“You mean mankind? You want us to mature?”

“No, just you. I made this whole universe for you. With each new life you grow and mature and become a larger and greater intellect.”

“Just me? What about everyone else?”

“There is no one else,” I said. “In this universe, there’s just you and me.”

You stared blankly at me. “But all the people on earth…”

“All you. Different incarnations of you.”

“Wait. I’m everyone!?”

“Now you’re getting it,” I said, with a congratulatory slap on the back.

“I’m every human being who ever lived?”

“Or who will ever live, yes.”

“I’m Abraham Lincoln?”

“And you’re John Wilkes Booth, too,” I added.

“I’m Hitler?” You said, appalled.

“And you’re the millions he killed.”

“I’m Jesus?”

“And you’re everyone who followed him.”

You fell silent.

“Every time you victimized someone,” I said, “you were victimizing yourself. Every act of kindness you’ve done, you’ve done to yourself. Every happy and sad moment ever experienced by any human was, or will be, experienced by you.”

You thought for a long time.

“Why?” You asked me. “Why do all this?”

“Because someday, you will become like me. Because that’s what you are. You’re one of my kind. You’re my child.”

“Whoa,” you said, incredulous. “You mean I’m a god?”

“No. Not yet. You’re a fetus. You’re still growing. Once you’ve lived every human life throughout all time, you will have grown enough to be born.”

“So the whole universe,” you said, “it’s just…”

“An egg.” I answered. “Now it’s time for you to move on to your next life.”

And I sent you on your way.
